I believe everyone who wants to work should work and should do work they enjoy. Doing work you love is vital for three reasons:

  1. Your job will be more enjoyable;
  2. You will be happier;
  3. You will make the world a better place.

I call this The 80/20 Job (not to be confused with the 80/20 Rule, which means 20% of what you do provides 80% of the results). The 80/20 Job is a job that you enjoy 80% of the time.

“Why,” you may ask, “can’t I get a job that I enjoy 100% of the time?”
The answer is, “There is no such thing.”

Here are some things most people don’t like about work:

  • Time away from family, friends, and personal interests;
  • Unnecessary but mandatory paperwork;
  • Malfunctioning machinery and technology;
  • Unpleasant coworkers, supervisors, or clients;
  • Making mistakes;
  • Not knowing the procedures or policies (until there’s a problem);
  • Stress;
  • Traffic.

These problems are present in almost every job. Since problems are inevitable, why not have a job that reduces the number of problems, by doing work you love? Having an 80/20 Job does not eliminate all your problems but it eliminates some and reduces the impact of many others. (Most interestingly, in my own experience, I have seen the number of problems with people at work greatly reduced.)

So my greatest hope is that everyone who wants to can get work they are good at doing and enjoy.
